Hooping for Hunger is an impact project founded by Flow Office Wisdom, with the goals of raising funds for and awareness of chronic persistent hunger on both a local and global scale.
The inspiration for the event came during a team building event that involved learning to make and use hula hoops - the Flow team had so much fun, and realized as well that there was a lot of interest by other park-goers in the hula hooping! This got the creative juices flowing, and the plan to provide a community fundraising event began to form. There had already been a relationship forged between Flow Office Wisdom and The Hunger Project Canada, and so they were an obvious choice for the globally focussed recipient of the funds raised, and after some investigation, Chalmers Community Services Centre was identified as the local recipient. These organizations were both chosen based on their specific focus on empowerment and creating sustainability. Both organizations strive to help those suffering from hunger and poverty to improve their own situations.
Both the inagural event in 2015, and the second edition is 2016 were great successes, and brought the Guelph community together in a fun and easy going atmosphere! All participants have worked together each year to reach the fundraising goals (Over $20 000 has now been dispersed!) and to increase the community knowledge of global and local hunger issues.
The 2017 event will be even bigger and better, with a goal of raising another $10 000 to be divided amongst both organizaions, and plans to provide education about hunger issues to the community at large, as well as the participants in the event.
